Funeral of Edward VII

The late King Edward VII’s favourite charger Klldare and his fox terrier Caesar as part of his funeral cortège.
The tradition of placing the deceased’s boots (reversed) in the stirrups of his riderless or caparisoned horse is said to symbolise a fallen leader looking back on his troops for one last time.

Caesar (to the right of the picture) walks behind the coffin of his beloved master, King Edward VII. It should also be noted that Caesar took precedence over Heads of State in the procession, much to the annoyance of Kaiser Wilhelm II.
